The 3-Item EDC Everyone Should Carry (Even If You're Not Into Gear)
The EDC community loves showing off 15-item pocket dumps. Custom scales, limited edition drops, titanium everything. Cool to look at — but nobody starts there.
If you carry nothing right now, here are the three items that actually matter.
1. A Light
Your phone flashlight works in a pinch, but it kills your battery and you can't hold it and use your hands at the same time. A keychain-sized light weighs nothing, costs under $20, and you'll use it more than you expect.
When it matters: Walking to your car at night. Finding something under a seat. Checking a weird noise outside. Power outages.
What to look for: Rechargeable (USB-C), at least 100 lumens, small enough to forget it's there. The Olight i3T 2 EOS checks every box — USB-C, 200 lumens, and under $20.
2. A Cutting Tool
Opening packages, cutting zip ties, trimming a loose thread, slicing an apple — small cutting tasks come up daily. A compact multitool or a simple folding tool lives in your pocket without bulk.
When it matters: Every Amazon box. Every piece of fruit. Every time you dig at tape with your fingernails and think "I should have something for this."
What to look for: Legal in your area, under 3 inches, lightweight, easy to open one-handed. The Victorinox Classic SD is the gold standard — scissors, blade, file, and a nail cleaner, all smaller than a thumb drive.
3. A Way to Write
Your phone can take notes, sure. But pulling out a phone in a meeting signals "I'm texting." A pen signals "I'm paying attention." Plus — signing forms, jotting down a license plate, leaving a note on someone's car.
When it matters: Every time you say "I'll remember that" and don't. Every time you pat your pockets looking for a pen that isn't there.
What to look for: Compact, reliable ink, doesn't leak. A Fisher Space Pen or a Zebra F-301 both work great.
Why These Three?
They solve the most common daily micro-problems with zero bulk. You won't feel them in your pocket, but you'll reach for them constantly once they're there.
The best EDC isn't the most expensive or the most tactical. It's the gear you actually carry — every single day.
The Upgrade Path
Once these three feel natural, you'll start noticing what else would help:
- Getting locked out? Add a slim pry tool with a bottle opener.
- Losing keys? Add a Tile or AirTag.
- Phone always dying? Add a slim power bank like the Anker Nano 5,000mAh.
But start with three. Master three. Then grow from there.
Start simple. Carry daily. That's how every great EDC begins.
